The history of the house
The corner house at the Schiffbauerdamm, built in the eighties of the 19th century, has accommodated many different localities since then. Until 1919 the resident tavern was a favored meeting place of the local shipwrights. In the following years the shipyards were displaced by residential and business buildings; at this the former chambers of the tavern became the domicile of the Genevan association of Swiss traders and a branch bank.
In the year 1931 a new owner established a restaurant of the exalted category “for the appetent satisfaction of the desire for food and drinks”. In search of an appropriate name, he decided in favour of “Ganymed“, the cupbearer of the Greek gods.

The building was restored after the Second World War by the architect Hermann Henselmann (constructor of the Stalinallee). In the times of the GDR the Ganymed had been a restaurant of the elites where known artists, like Brecht, Weill or Weigel, the political establishment of the GDR as well as members of the allied forces, stopped for a bite to eat.
After the Fall of the Wall the restaurant was closed and not re-opened until 1996, after comprehensive reconstruction measures had been accomplished.

Of the former ostentatious and within the war destroyed stucco facade nowadays only one mosaic with the picture of the Borussia is visible.
Today the restaurant is run as a French brasserie. In France brasseries are popular meeting places with guests from the political, economical and stage life.
In spring 2005 a magnificent sun terrace was established on the bank of the Spree river, in addition
